Sigma Nu Wins Dance Competition During Greek Week

This past week (March 4th-7th) was Greek Week at the University of Alabama. One of our favorite aspects of Greek Week is the famous dance off, which is where all fraternities and sororities compete in a dance off. Pictured below are the freshman that brought Sigma Nu the win: James Blackwood, Matthew Gude, Sam Parker, Tate Thomas, Whit Joseph, and John Kurzydlo.

“Wings of Hope” Philanthropy Event at the Sigma Nu Theta Chapter House

This past fall, the Theta chapter along with ΔΔΔ, ΖβΤ and ΑΔΠ sororities hosted ‘Wings of Hope’ philanthropy event, which raised money for the Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

The event included a performance by the band The Doctors and The Lawyers and a wing-eating contest. Sponsors Red Bull, Guy Harvey and American Fishing Tackle Co. donated prizes to the wing-eating contest winners, and Guy Harvey also sold T-shirts. All the proceeds went to the charities.

Theta Plans for Future and Expands Web Presence

I hope Theta Chapter finishes the semester strong like our football team.  As you may have heard, recruitment has been suspended at the University for the remainder of the semester.  Several other fraternal organizations have either had their charters revoked or lost block seating privileges.

Rest assured, Theta Chapter is not one of those groups!

House Corporation Welcomes Member From Tuscaloosa

As part of the House Corporation’s influence in Tuscaloosa, we have recruited another member for a Chapter advisor role.  Please join me in welcoming Thomas Powe ’05, Θ2178.  As you all know, this is a large responsibility.  Thomas will effectively be our “boots on the ground” in Tuscaloosa.

Theta Chapter Developing New Website

In the coming months, the House Corporation is looking to design and start a Chapter website.  Lucky for us, Jamie Holman ’89 Θ1826 in Birmingham and Jason Pelham ’90 Θ1879 of Pretty Cool Huh, LLC in Atlanta have spearheaded this effort and are well on the way to designing a functional and interactive website.

I have no doubt we will have the best fraternal website not only in the southeastern conference, but in the country as well.  The exemplars that I have reviewed already are better than most of the national fraternity websites currently available.

If you have expertise in this are and would like to get involved, please contact me.  We are always looking for new ideas to make this a better product.

Also, if you have composites which predate 1980 and would be willing to share copies of these to be posted on the site, please contact me with the years you have.

Sigma Nu Prepares for 2013 Recruitment

Chris Williams ’88 Θ1800, of Montgomery, AL has done a great job of serving as a recruitment liaison the last few years.  We wish him well as we welcome Davis Underwood ’11 to the role of head recruitment chairman.  Davis, along with chairman Kit Harbuck ’11 and Daniel Peterman ’11, is excited to continue the long-standing tradition of selecting only the best young men to join our fraternity.

With that being said, we cannot rely on in-house members to point us in the right direction of quality candidates.  Therefore, any help or input on quality young men that you feel would fit Theta Chapter would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any information on known legacies that could potentially be missed would be very helpful.  Feel free to contact these chairman directly via our Rush Recruitment form.

As always, thank you for your interest in and support of Theta Chapter.

Revised Academic Policy Raises Scholastic Standards for New Members, Actives

This fall, Theta Chapter continued to display excellence in many areas.  The Chapter received the highest ranking in two of the three categories that went into our student organization seating application.

Every fraternity on campus puts together an application, and I am pleased to announce that Theta Chapter ranked highest in philanthropy and campus leadership!

SGA President Matt Calderone ’09 Implements Delegate Program

Matt Calderone '09 - SGA President

Matt Calderone ’09 – SGA President

At this time, I would like to recognize two of our members for their leadership on campus. Matt Calderone ’09 is serving as the Student Government Association president. During his term Matt has accomplished a great deal.

The Sunday Service Initiative is a program where students volunteer every Sunday for those affected by the tornado. Matt has also started a Delegates Program in which every student organization has two delegates that work with members of the SGA.

The program increases communication and informs all organizations of options that are available to them.

I would also like to recognize Alexander Kontomitras ’10, who represented Theta Chapter as secretary for the IFC.

Alumni, Theta Needs Your Recruitment Recommendations

As we start another new year, we also start another recruitment process. Our recruitment chairmen have always done an excellent job building new pledge classes, but we appreciate and rely on referrals from our alumni.

We value your input and ask that you please send membership recommendations to Recruitment Chairman Davis Underwood ’11. Please use our recruitment form to send in your recommendations.

Chapter Officers Address Academics, Facility

This year the executive council decided to focus our time in office on two objectives: member grades and house improvements. The Theta Chapter reinstated the policy of waiting until the spring semester to initiate new members to ensure that their grades are acceptable.

We have also established a policy that states if an active member falls below a certain G.P.A for two consecutive semesters, he will have to go inactive for a semester to increase his G.P.A.

Focusing on the second objective, we have made may improvements to the house. Some of these include adding a basketball court, TV room and completely overhauling the Internet in the house. I would like to thank our House Corporation and all alumni who assisted with these projects.
